Esperanza is committed to having a deeper and more lasting effect on communities of color, poor and the disenfranchised communities, on youth and women. As part of this work, the Esperanza is offering a paid summer internship for young people in San Antonio. Interested students will be required to submit an application that explains their interest, their goals and how they see their role in the apprenticeship program and one letter of recommendation. A committee of artists, academics, activists, community members, and staff will review the letters and interview all interested students the week of June 9. They will then select the best-qualified individual(s) for our program.

At the end of the summer, interns will have gained the following skills:

Requirements of Internship

Esperanza description: The people of Esperanza dream of a world where everyone has civil rights and economic justice, where the environment is cared for, where cultures are honored and communities are safe.  The Esperanza Center advocates for those wounded by domination and inequality — women, people of color, lesbians and gay men, the working class and poor.  We believe in creating bridges between people by exchanging ideas and educating and empowering each other.  We believe it is vital to share our visions of hope... we are esperanza.

ArtEscuela description: ArtEscuela is a program of the Esperanza Peace and Justice Center, ArtEscuela gives youth a place where they can grow, learn and increase their own awareness about social justice through art and It's a place where they can educate others.  By participating in ArtEscuela, students gain the confidence and strength to organize and challenge the methodologies and stereotypes of society.   ArtEscuela is a program that gives participants a forum for conversations on issues and topics that concern them, their community and the world.  It is in the dedication of uncovering the truth and understanding struggle, that youth must come together in a space to construct and to strive for human rights, equality and knowledge in all that they do.

Internship description: The apprentice will work together with the ArtEscuela coordinator and other staff at the Esperanza. A large part of the internship process includes intensive training around racism, sexism, classism, and sexuality, technical training, as well as workshops on history and culture. As part of the internship you will be expected to attend workshops, do outside readings and writings, and attend all Esperanza events. You will also help develop a summer youth outreach series, work on publicity/outreach of programs, filing, cleaning and general maintenance of the Esperanza.

In the fall interns will be expected to work with the ArtEscuela coordinator (meetings once a month) to establish youth outreach networks, create contacts with educators, school district personnel, parent organizations; outreach to low income housing projects, battered women's shelters, women's employment centers, day care centers. In addition, interns will work as animadora/mentors during the fall, helping to guide the direction of the program of Artescuela and other youth organizing at the Esperanza.
